How to wipe out secularism in India

I couldn’t believe that the DNA under Aditya Sinha (one of the editors whom I deeply admire for his editorials, his guts in taking on the DMK, and his dedication in bringing to light the atrocities suffered by Tamils during the genocidal attack in 2009) had published such a rabid, anti-Muslim piece written by Subramanian Swamy.

This article is possibly the closest we will ever get to reading an almost-Nazi and absolutely chilling description of the Hindutva project in any mainstream publication.

For those who have difficulty imagining Swamy’s HINDU NATION, here is what it means.

Majoritarianism and political power to Hindus

If half the Hindus voted together, rising above caste and language, a genuine Hindu party would have a two-thirds majority in Parliament and the assemblies.

Portraying Hindus as the sole victims of terrorism

The first lesson to be learnt from the recent history of Islamic terrorism against India and for tackling terrorism in India is that the Hindu is the target and that Muslims of India are being programmed by a slow reactive process to become radical and thus slide into suicide against Hindus.

Denying non-Hindus the fundamental right to vote, and the fundamental right to power-sharing making them non-citizens

The Muslims of India can join us if they genuinely feel for the Hindu. That they do I will not believe unless they acknowledge with pride that though they may be Muslims, their ancestors were Hindus. If any Muslim acknowledges his or her Hindu legacy, then we Hindus can accept him or her as a part of the Brihad Hindu Samaj (greater Hindu society) which is Hindustan. India that is Bharat that is Hindustan is a nation of Hindus and others whose ancestors were Hindus. Others, who refuse to acknowledge this, or those foreigners who become Indian citizens by registration, can remain in India but should not have voting rights (which means they cannot be elected representatives).

Retelling history in which even atrocities by Hindutva like the Babri Masjid demolition are recast into narratives where the Hindu becomes the “victim”

The third lesson is that whatever and however small the terrorist incident, the nation must retaliate massively. For example, when the Ayodhya temple was sought to be attacked, we should have retaliated by re-building the Ram temple at the site.

Calling for the demolition of several other Muslim religious places of worship

Remove the masjid in Kashi Vishwanath temple and the 300 masjids at other temple sites.

Not recognizing the autonomy of Kashmir

Remove Article 370 and resettle ex-servicemen in the valley. Create Panun Kashmir for the Hindu Pandit community. Look for or create an opportunity to take over PoK.

Making India a Hindu nation through a cultural genocide

Implement the uniform civil code, make learning of Sanskrit and singing of Vande Mataram mandatory, and declare India a Hindu Rashtra in which non-Hindus can vote only if they proudly acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus. Rename India Hindustan as a nation of Hindus and those whose ancestors were Hindus.

Denying the freedom of religion enshrined in India’s Constitution

Enact a national law prohibiting conversion from Hinduism to any other religion. Re-conversion will not be banned.

Maintain the inhuman caste system which is central to Hindu identity and the Hindu nation

Declare that caste is not based on birth but on code or discipline. Welcome non-Hindus to re-convert to the caste of their choice provided they adhere to the code of discipline.

Meddling with the internal affairs of non-Hindu neighbouring states

- If Pakistan continues to back terrorists, assist the Baluchis and Sindhis to get their independence.
- Annex land from Bangladesh in proportion to the illegal migrants from that country staying in India. At present, the northern third from Sylhet to Khulna can be annexed to re-settle illegal migrants.

That hate-filled article should not have been titled “How to wipe out Islamic terror”. It must have been, “How to wipe out India’s minorities.” Making use of a terror-hit emotive background to espouse a policy of eradicating India’s secular character is nothing but a threat to national security.

(I also urge you to read Shivam Vij’s response to the DNA piece)

  1. Aditya Sinha is no saint. He was against M Karunanidhi not out of love of Tamils. It was because M K was from ‘other’ caste.
He had published a highly provocative, mischievous article written by the same author when he was the editor of The New Indian Express. It was a full page article with blaring quotations and illustrations. The Goal-strategy to wipe out Islamic terror or Muslims in India was mentioned there too. The present editor has removed the article from the website. I had republished it in my blog. http://luthfispace.blogspot.com/2010/06/highly-provocative-mischievous-article.html
It evoked feeble response from the readers. Only one or two letters admiring Dr. Swamy were published. Muslims refused to get provoked and fall in the trap. Nobody responded.

  2. Vijay Kumar says:

Regarding 50% of voting together, someone already very close is someone like Mayawati. Why cant Subramaniam Swamy ask for a few more hindu votes to Mayawati, so that 50% hindus vote to same party?
It is clear from the observations on caste etc, that Mr. Swamy means only high castes when he talks of hindus. So it is not exactly majoritarianism. It is actually a cry for lost caste privileges, masquerading as majoritarianism.

  3. They published counter views today! ‘In the spirit of not denying space to different points of view’ it seems. A walk through the mental asylum might produce more sensible articles.

  4. Athos says:

I am equally shocked and dismayed by this man’s attempted misappropriation of the current situation to push idiotic ideas. While it might not be unfair to say Hindus may be somewhat preferred targets of (these) terrorists, these attacks definitely do not spare anyone on the basis of religion. The perpetrators are happy with anyone’s blood being spilt, and creating distrust between different communities is playing into the hands of agencies working to destabilise our nation.

It is frustrating to find such notions being propagated. Loons everywhere, on both “sides” (excuse me for using that word)

  5. dinesh kumar says:

only those who are nowhere near being Indian, and who are still stuck in the diseased and frantic search for a superiority, which stems from a severe feeling of being rootless and insignificant, can develop such fanatical and inhuman ideas.

  6. Girish says:

THE WEST’S EXPERIENCE WITH ISLAM – LEARN FROM IT !!
NO WESTERN SOCIETY – NOT ONE -THAT HAS ADMITTED MUSLIMS HAS SPARED FROM ISLAMIC TERRORISM

How many Muslim immigrants should the West admit? As I argued in Stealth Jihad in 2008, no more — because the more who come, the more demands there will be for accommodation of Sharia provisions in the West. And as we saw when Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange struck down Oklahoma’s anti-Sharia law, Americans generally remain abysmally ignorant of the political, authoritarian, oppressive and supremacist elements of Sharia. And Western multiculturalists, including the feminists Kevin Myers righteously skewers here, remain silent about those oppressive aspects of Sharia, because to speak up would be “racist.”

“Muslim girls are covertly prepared for forced marriage. Yet the feminists stay silent,” by Kevin Myers in the Irish Independent, January 6 (thanks to Benedict):

YOU really can take your pick from the interconnected headlines of the past fortnight: the church-massacres of Christians in Egypt and Iraq by al-Qa’ida, and the murder of the governor of the Punjab, followed by a petition of support for his killer from 500 “moderate” Islamic scholars in Pakistan.

Closer to home there were the terrorist conspiracies in Denmark, Sweden and Britain, and the revelation that while the Christian population in Britain fell by two million in four years, the Muslim population there increased by 74pc to 2.9 million since 2001 (yes, the very year when Islamophobia supposedly became endemic). [...]

This is unquestionably a major issue for western (once-Christian) civilisations: how many immigrants should they admit? The even more important issue, concealed in the Greek government’s wall-plan, is this: how many Muslim immigrants can any society take, and yet retain the qualities that made it attractive to Muslims in the first place?…

And of course, if the immigrants then conform with local norms — as British Hindus and Sikhs have usually done — then there is usually no long-term problem. The result is a cultural enrichment and fusion in which everyone gains.

This is simply not true of Muslim immigration. Not merely is there not a single stable, prosperous Muslim democracy in the world, free of terrorism and fundamentalism, there is no society that has received large numbers of Muslims that has not soon been confronted by an Islamic defiance of existing societal norms. This defiance can be cultural, in which dissident dress code is sought as a religious right; or educational, in which Muslims are raised within their own autonomous school system; or legal, with a demand for Sharia law; or insurrectionary, in which local Muslims opt for terrorist jihad against the state which admitted them.

No European country — not one — that has admitted Hindus has had to face any comparable problem.
THE EU’s response has been to ignore what it finds uncongenial to talk about, as meanwhile dogmatic “multiculturalists” silence sceptics with the perverse gagging laws that have arisen in every European country. These make it almost impossible for Europeans to defend European values without being called “racist” or an “Islamophobe”.
Perversity then heaps upon perversity, because the political group that has most to lose from the political triumph of Islam, feminism, is totally silent at its inroads. Somali girls are circumcised; polygamous Muslim men are given state-allowances for all their wives and children; and subordinate gynaecostans are created for women in British cities, in which the burqa (body covering), hijab (head covering) and niqab (face veil) are becoming almost mandatory. Meanwhile, girls are covertly being withdrawn from education and prepared for forced marriage. Yet the feminists stay silent.

It might very well be that Islam, with its unapologetic determination to spread its norms wherever it goes, will prove to be the more robust and vigorous civilisation. So be it. In which case, might the 128-mile Greek Wall not simply join the Maginot Line and the Great Wall of China as yet another historically doomed defensive line? Well, not quite.
There is still a China, still a France. But what about the great Graeco-Roman Christian civilisations that once existed across Asia Minor and North Africa, from Anatolia through Syria and Tunisia and on to Casablanca, and which failed to defend themselves against militant Islam? What remains of them? The remains remain.

And so shall Europe and America become, unless they wake up to what is happening.

  7. Dr M.M.KHAN says:

No one can expect such article from Horward educated person .It appears it is written by someone from Vidhia Peeth.Actually it shows the mentality of a Nazi like Hindu Brahamin .

  8. Gautham says:

I completely agree with M.R Subramanian Swamy in his article. I think most of the questions raised by the author here are factually incorrect, and is simply an emotive reaction to the article. There is nothing hate-filled about the article, but a very bold attempt by Mr. Swamy to put his forthright views on the future of India, if Islamic terrorism were to be allowed to take further root in our country.

  9. Dr M.M.KHAN says:

No one can expect such article from Horward educated person .It appears it is written by someone from Vidhia Peeth .Actually it shows the mentality of a Nazi like Hindu fascist Brahmin ,Almost same is being advocated by RSS and its family for the last 60 yrs in the name of Hindutva and Akhand Bharat but could not achieve it and will never achieve it .

  10. anand says:

Subramanim Swamy can go to any length to stay in the news. However this one is particularly nasty. How could a person of this mentality be part of Harvard. The education minister of Karnataka is his disciple. He wants anybody who does not attend Gita classes to be thrown out of the country! Hinduism has not been engulfed by other religion simply because of its tolerance of every other religion. Many belonging to other religions follow Hindu way of life. Those who have left Hinduism are those who were made to suffer by us caste Hindus.

  11. captainjohann says:

Hi Meena, I think the editor of DNA has done a service to the nation by publishing this article. This man is having an agenda and that is in the guise of Pro Hinduthva is actually at Balkanising India. An agenda of USA and young Tamils like you must know that an opinion like this exists amongst the people especially in North Indian middle class. This rabid hinduthva feeds on the insecurity of Middle class Hindus who know that their temples were destroyed, their women raped and and property looted.Inspite of being in large numbers, these guys always welcomed the invaders and allowed them to rule over them. Ifone goes to Varanasi temple, the construction of Gyan vapi Mosque must be galling to any Hindu who visits this temple. the Muslims just do not underastand that this mosque actually breeds fundamentalism even amongst the large number of pilgrims who visit from south.

  13. keshav c. says:

    Hi,
This is the first time I have visited your blog. I hope to become more familiar with your work in the (hopefully) near future.

The views of Mr. Swamy have certainly surprised me. I looked up to him, not long ago. Not so much now. However, these kind of inflammatory, distasteful and childish black and white opinions are quite typical for middle (and upper) class Indians with access to the internet. In fact I have never ever come across any other fellow Indian, who I could truly identify as a moderate liberal, on the internet that is. I think this has something to do with our extremely sheltered, cradle to funeral pyre upbringing.Growing up, going to private schools, I had never met another met a Muslim guy till I went to college. Being a very good boy, I only interacted with family and family-approved friends. As a result, I never formed my own opinions and I had a stereotypical view of different communities. I am sure the same is true for many people from the middle class. Most of us may think that is not true, but it is to a large extent. All of us have stereotypical views of people from different castes, states, nationalities etc.

So here is my crazy idea. We Indians, I feel, would greatly benefit by following the western tradition of leaving our homes at 18. This whole notion of staying at home to take care of our parents, has created one of the most diverse yet fragmented societies in the world. As Indians, we are in this amazing situation, wherein a whole new world is available to us, just waiting to be discovered, only if we would just move out of our state. But for some unfathomable reason we all like to be that larva which is happy to die in it’s cocoon (I am sure you can be more poetic). I think this is why we have never been great explorers. Someone should make a time machine, travel to the past and kick the ass of the guy who said it is a great sin to travel by sea. Has anybody ever wondered why we talk about great explorers like Marco Polo, Hiuen Tsang, Ibn Battuta, who all have wonderful things to say about India, but there isn’t a single Indian among those great names? It is inexcusable, when our country happens to be in the middle of the Indian ocean. AND it is called the INDIAN ocean!

As someone, who got the best things in life, having been born middle class, there is no excuse for ignorance and the resulting bigotry. Just getting to know your fellow indians a little more, would solve a huge number of misconceptions. There are always exceptions though. But that would require a little more elegant answer, I guess.

Dear captainjohann,Hindus are Ghouls, every 12 hour one dalit man is being killed by barbaric hindus and every 6 hour one dalit woman is being raped by like Subrahniam swammy cousins.Hindus are born barbaric and corrupts who had killed million of buddhist in india and demolished the million of Buddhist monestry.Puri temple,Gurvai temple belongs to buddhist not Hindus.166 million dalits and 120 million muslims should join together to wipr out the Hindu Ghouls who are terrorising dalits one side and muslims otherside.

  16. Sridhar says:

Caste system is already codified under the Hindu Law of India. “Manu Smiruthi” (the despicable Hindu scripture codifying the caste system) has the status of law in India because it is one of the many scriptures on which Hindu Civil Law is based.

  17. Ravana says:

What would be his next suggestion I wonder? Molten silver poured down the ear of the dalit who recites the vedas? Or perhaps chopping the thumb off the tribal who learns archery? Perhaps he’ll enlighten me..when was the last time the hindu society considered dalits a part of itself? And when did the dalits ever claim sanskrit as their heritage..perhaps it would be wise not to impose upon us things we never identified with in the 1st place.

  18. Ajay says:

This is more regressive and radical than what any of the right and the evangelicals here in America have come up with. I recently read Mr. Swami’s Hindu manifesto, Hindus Under Siege: The Way Out. This article is essentially a precis of that book. He wants to call India Hindustan and argues, on etymological basis, that Hindustan is a secular word while Bharat is not. This sort of sophistry is typical of religious and political leaders all through history. His claim that the “continued rise in the share of Muslims and Christians in the total population is a threat to the Hindu foundation of the nation” (in the book) and his asking Hindus to rise “above caste and language” (in this article) is nothing short of a call to a theocratic state. Though he denies any theocratic innuendoes in his book, he also writes about the treatment of Hindus in Tamil Nadu that “all this is happening while Hindus are in power in the government.” Thomas Jefferson in one of the most significant democratic words ever written said, //legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State//. The Indian Constitution, it is no secret, was drafted in part from principles in the Constitution of the United States of America. Swami’s statement clearly negates the notion of the wall. And proposing a law that would allow non-Hindus to vote only if they acknowledge, proudly in that, their Hindu ancestry is, deplorable and fascist.

He goes on and on about this concept of “Hindu mindset”, as if to say it is a prerequisite to personal character and national character. Does he seriously mean to say that any non-Hindu, or say even a Hindu who is a non-believer, lacks those qualities? Can he not see it is downright ridiculous? Or does he chose to ignore the manifestations of such a mindset in the form of Mr. Thackeray and his henchmen? Such bigoted views are in line with terms such as “Christian compassion”, as if some noble qualities in humans are strictly proprietary. One of the chief trump cards of religion is the flawed belief that it is the de facto fount of morality. Swami like other proselytizers from other faiths seems to be no exception in this.
