tried to divide our country, that would sound like evoking sympathy,as their good old country was ravaged by purposeless people.
the illogic of our country is glaring and is at the root of the unease and the brute criminality.
they might love their country too much to watch it split into two,in that case, they have to allow a true secularism to begin, with every culture represented.
not being able to do that, yet wanting to retain supremacy, that is the sinhalese curse.
it is a simple issue, the sinhalese cannot prevent eelam, and there will be a lot of tamils in their area, they will have to provide secularism or else it will turn into a minor india pakistan.
the only real and permanent solution would be a secular democracy like ours but in the last phase of the war,the sinhalese put paid to that chance.
there is no way that the tamils can now live without eelam.
if the lankans had had patience and brains, they would have been transparent during the last phase of the war and would have also allowed a secular democracy.

Meena,

Since this comments section appears to be a fan thread, let me add my name as a dedicated reader of your blog, as well as of your poetry and nonfiction. Any chance you'll do a reading or appearance somewhere in the Boston area during your stay in the US? Good luck with everything!

Best wishes,
Mircea Raianu

You're a really good writer, vivid, clear, direct, coherent, from the heart through the head.

And you recognize that when things change, they change; the important thing is to recognize the reality and figure out what it will mean, not to mourn and fight to keep what is going and gone.

@Matt, thank for the message. Nice actually that someone meets me in real life, and then sees my blog. It is always the other way around.

No, that dear man was really not rude to me, sorry if the meaning has come out that way. He felt bad too, I think, and that's why he also consoled me, reasoning that the Tamil Tigers managed to last for nearly a quarter century..

I was at your talk earlier and really enjoyed it. So much so, in fact, I made a point to check out your blog when I got home. (I'm following you on Twitter now too.) Sorry to hear someone was rude to you; there were some weird people in attendance. Just the fact that you have a blog made me smile. I hate it when people who don't blog, Facebook, tweet, or otherwise have any experience online talk about the "digital public sphere." Thanks for this post. I can't wait to read your other work.

@Samartha, sorry for returning to this so late in the day. you rise a lot of important points. the compartmentalization is partly what I choose, and partly what happens to me without my choosing it. i think the themes I touch upon (more than my identity itself) is what gets these labels to me..

i absolutely agree with you that sometimes political poetry (dalit poetry included) does read like random sloganeering. even i slip into that trap sometimes, so i can feel what you say...

i m not sure if scraping reservation is going to put an end to caste oppression. because, the beneficiaries of reservation (a lot of the most backward communities) are responsible for some of the most heinous atrocities against the dalits... but i do believe that a coming together to address this issue will help. thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Hi Meena,

I don't bother about caste, creed, race or religion. I am watching you and admiring you as my friend.

I would like to ask you about your surname, Kandasamy When I was studying my M. Sc. in Virudhunagar I hade a college-mate whose name is also Kandasamy. After our studies he joined somewhere as Asst. Prof. of Chemistry in a Govt. College, may be Ooty. Are you related to him.

I come from a family where all are equal and our servants used to sit with us and eat.

I would like to talk to you to know you better. If you are not interested, doesn't matter.

Wish you a Healthy and Happy Deepavali

With Love and Best Wishes

Excellent interview, Meena. :-)

However, it is slightly painful to see a promising, young poet compartamentalize herself so tightly. I would much rather mention Meena Kandasamy as one of the best young IE poets we have out there rather than the "first Dalit Indian English woman writer."

The Dalit poetry movement in Hindi is decades-old and I have immense respect for some of its better poets. What sometimes bothers me is that poetry itself is compromised to make room for slogans.

The first step towards breaking the caste system is deciding to break it uniformly. Otherwise, you have caste oppression to deal with on the one hand and senseless reservation to deal with on the other. It is when the "Dalit" and the "Non-Dalit" poetry merge that this can happen. And like you say, poetry alone can initiate this change.

I've read your work with great interest all through, and respect you as a good fellow poet. However, everybody is entitled to their opinion. I am too. :-)
